No site, no matter how large their jobs listings, is going to magically land a job in your lap. They take effort just like any other job-hunting method and don't necessarily help everyone. No site, no matter how large their jobs listings, is going to magically land a job in your lap. They take effort just like any other job-hunting method and don't necessarily help everyone. In today's electronic world, it will probably seem impossible to avoid them forever. When you look for work from them, here are some pointers to consider.
You might want to try networking before you go online. This involves reaching out to friends and associates looking for others they think you should talk to about your career. As you get more and more referrals to people in your desired career, the idea is that someone eventually gives you a job. If you tried and failed, or this simply is impossible for you to do, you will find yourself on the Internet.
Just as with any job hunt, the first step is to have a really great resume. Most sites require you to post a resume, and all resumes need to be great no matter the method you use to distribute them. If you aren't perfectly confident in your resume-writing skills already, you may want to get a few tips first. Many colleges and universities will offer some form of training to their students, usually for free. Some non-profits and other organizations offer free training services. If you can't find some live experts to help you, your best bet is a recent book from your local library or your favorite search engine.
Make sure you are meticulous when you write and edit your resume. Many employers are looking for any excuse to throw out a resume?especially if they have too many applicants. Make it look great and make you, as a potential employee, look fantastic.
Everyone is invariably going to have something in their past that isn't particularly praise-worthy. There are many "legal" ways to draw focus away from these details and direct them toward the good things. If you have tons of skills but a lousy job history, for instance, a functional resume will accentuate your abilities. Do your homework and learn all of your options.
Once you have a great resume, many job listing sites will allow you to upload it directly from your file. This is a great option, but make sure you look at your resume after you upload it. There will often be formatting errors created when your document is converted into their format. Don't be lazy! There's no point submitting a resume if it isn't perfect. Go over the resume and make it look professional again.
When searching for job listing sites, make sure that they are legitimate and you feel comfortable with them. The biggest sites are often safer simply because they are scrutinized more often and have more to lose from a bad reputation. Smaller sites that specialize in your career choice may have jobs the larger sites won't list, however.
Many sites also allow companies to look over their member's resumes. If this sounds great to you, go ahead and make your resume public. Just remember that a lot of the bad guys will have access to your resume at this point. If you get any job offers you didn't apply for, check out the company before you agree to an interview. Also figure out the type of compensation you are willing to agree to?many of these offers are commission only jobs.
Jobs listings will rarely be a godsend to anyone, but if you take your time and do the research, you just may find a job from one.
